DISCUSSION

From this, we can postulate that women are more emancipated in TFA than ANH as TFA, women are portrayed as being in possession of greater amounts of both “real” and “soft” power. The film incorporates the notion of non-conformance to the stereotypes “aggression is male” and “passivity is female” through its portrayal both stylistically and thematically of the main characters. Women are allowed greater access and possession of  “martial” or “tangible” power as well as societal acceptance from men of female assertiveness or directions. This greater balance and symmetry of power between the 2 genders thus renders the traditional concept of a “relationship of dominance and subordinance” inapplicable and obsolete through the transcendence of the social construct of traditional gender roles as assigned by society both within the created society within the domain of the film and reflects the changing reality of women's rights as espoused by Millett in Sexual Politics. TFA directly contrasts with the control of “every avenue of power within the society”  by men espoused in Sexual Politics, and resists the notion of the current existence of a patriarchy. As such, we can conclude that women are more empowered within TFA.
